A group calling themselves the Siouan Indians says the Lumbee Tribe is stealing their heritage.
The Lumbee Tribe claims descent from the historic Cheraw Tribe, a Siouan group. A woman of Siouan ancestry says that claim is wrong but a Lumbee spokesperson said the groups are all related.
The Lumbee Tribe is seeking federal recognition through Congress. The tribe is currently barred from going through the Bureau of Indian Affairs process due to a unique termination-era law.
