"Ever since all the accolades were doled out for the Congressional hearings on Lumbee recognition a few months ago, things have been very quiet up on Capitol Hill. Shortly after a large entourage of Lumbees and their supporters went to Washington to state their case, they were hounded by whispers of gambling and casinos among the Religious Right. Ironically, these rumors were fueled by tribes that were in the gambling business.
Already, the Lumbees were anchored with a split-state delegation thanks to the Cherokees. So, tribes whose coffers are swollen with gaming money are not only spreading their funds around Washington to gain influence and favor, but they are also sending money to their enemies."
