Lumbee recognition bill delayed on Senate floor
Wednesday, December 3, 2003
A bill to recognize the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina won't be taken up by the Senate until next year. Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) sought quick passage before the Thanksgiving recess but some colleagues had questions about the bill. The Congressional Budget Office estimates an annual cost of $77 million, mostly for Indian Health Service (IHS) funding. The House has yet to take up a companion bill offered by Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.). A rival bill by Rep. Charles Taylor (R-N.C.), an ally of the Eastern Cherokee Tribe, would require the Lumbees to seek recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Lumbees are currently prohibited from doing so. Get the Story:
