Former residential school official in court

A former dormitory supervisor at a residential school in British Columbia appeared in court to face abuse charges dating back to the 1960s.

Native students at the St. Mary's School alleged abuse by Gordon Irvin Kinney, but he fled to Thailand. He was extradited to face charges of indecent assault and gross indecency.

The Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society welcomed the return of Kinney to Canada. The group's crisis line was flooded with calls last summer after he was arrested.

Neil Phillips, 56, a former student at the school, said the trial of Kinney should help start the healing process for victims of residential school abuse.
