A bill to block new liquor licenses for facilities near sacred Bear Butte was killed by a South Dakota Senate committee on Wednesday.
HB1227
would exempt business within the boundaries of Sturgis, the site of an annual biker rally. Tribal members and spiritual leaders have complained that encroachment from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is harming Bear Butte.
But opponents, including the state Agriculture Secretary, said the bill would hurt economic prospects. The Senate State Affairs Committee voted 7-2 against the proposal.
