Lakota activists in South Dakota are trying to force Meade County to schedule a vote on two liquor licenses that were approved near sacred Bear Butte.
One license was for beer while the other was for full liquor. Both were approved by the county commission despite overwhelming opposition from Lakota activists, ranchers, church groups and local residents.
Lakota activists collected signatures for a petition on the beer license. The county refused to schedule a vote, an issue that is now in court.
Another petition for the full liquor license was submitted but may not have enough signatures. A lawsuit is pending.
