Tribal leaders and members gathered at the South Dakota Legislature on Tuesday for Native American Day.
The event was ceremonial but was also about business. Tribal members came to lobby state lawmakers on issues like racial profiling and social services.
"I realize that when you drive off the rez, all those laws apply to you," Mary Ann Bear Heels McCowan of First Voices said, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. "We're bringing our concerns to the Legislature, where it makes a difference."
