Owner of bar near Bear Butte faces unpaid bills

The owner of a bar near sacred Bear Butte in South Dakota faces the loss of his liquor license for thousands of dollars in unpaid bills.

Jay Allen won the license despite opposition from tribal activists, local ranchers and religious groups. The Meade County Commission cited economic development needs when it made the controversial decision last summer.

But angry contractors say Allen never paid them for work they did at the Broken Spoke Saloon. At a hearing on Tuesday, they asked the commission to suspend the license until the bills are paid.

Ann White Hat, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, urged the commission to revoke the license based on Allen's character.
