The chairman of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina stormed out of a council meeting on Tuesday, accusing others of trying to take control of federal housing money.
Chairman Jimmy Goins shouted at people at the meeting before leaving. I am not going to allow a nonprofit organization to run this tribe, The Fayetteville Observer quoted him as saying. Its not going to happen.
At issue is the millions the tribe receives from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. A nonprofit organization was set up to apply for the grants but Goins wants the tribal government to control the funds.
After Goins left, the council added the names of two members to a new bank account that handles the money.
