The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is helping three families become homeowners through a unique program.
The tribe conveyed 1-acre parcels to the families under a 50-year agreement. The families will be able to use the land as collateral for a conventional home mortgage.
Banks were reluctant to lend to tribal families without means of foreclosure. So the tribe adopted laws to authorize foreclosure through tribal court. The land will always stay in Indian hands.
