"It's said Sacagawea knew the land far, far west of the earth lodge villages in present-day North Dakota.
Where did she acquire that knowledge?
Most people have heard it's because she was a Shoshone child captured in the mountains and taken east by the Hidatsa.
But the Hidatsa memory has been missing from those accounts. That's changed with the recent publication of Lewis and Clark Through Indian Eyes, a book of stories written by Natives.
Mark Trahant, Shoshone-Bannock and an editor at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, revisits family lore of their ancestor, the expedition leader William Clark.
Debra Magpie Earling, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana, describes the tribal ways that sustained her people and of visions that carry them today.
Gerard Baker, Mandan-Hidatsa and park superintendent at Mount Rushmore, shared a story about Sacagawea.
Baker's mother descends from the Hidatsa villages. And his father's side comes from Mandan villages.
I heard many stories of our people and the villages when we lived on the mouth of the Knife River and the Big Missouri River near what is today the small village of Stanton, N.D., Baker writes."
