Students at a high school in Florida will be meeting with Roy Hawthorne, a Navajo Code Talker, on Friday.
All the students at Jensen Beach High School recently read the book "Navajo Code Talkers" by Nathan Aaseng. To learn first-hand about the Code Talker experience, they invited Hawthorne to speak at an assembly and at a community event.
During World War II, the Marines enlisted 29 Code Talkers to use the Navajo language to transmit messages in code. About 300 to 400 more Navajos followed in their footsteps.
Soldiers from the Comanche, Meskwaki, Choctaw, Sioux and Crow nations also served as Code Talkers during the war.
