Funeral services are scheduled to take place today for Charles Chibitty, the last Comanche Code Talker who died last week at the age of 83.

Chibitty was one of 17 Comanches who were drafted into military service during World War II to develop a secret code. He transmitted messages on D-Day, the critical June 6, 1944, battle in France.

Chibitty often recalled that he was enlisted to speak his language when he was forbidden to do so in boarding school. His grandson, Joe Martinez, said only about 800 people still speak Comanche today.
