Clarence Wolfguts, one of two surviving Lakota code talkers in South Dakota, gave a speech at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Wolfguts, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, served in the Army for three years during World War II. He encoded and decoded secret messages using the Lakota language.
"When we got the message, we'd tear it up and burn it. That's how secret they were," he said, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported.
Wolfguts said he encourages whoever will listen not to go to war.
