Senate committee to hold hearing on Code Talkers

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a hearing September 22 on the contributions of all Native American Code Talkers during World War II.

Members of several tribes, including the Meskwaki and Comanche, helped the U.S. develop unbreakable codes. But only Navajo Nation Code Talkers have been recognized for their achievements.

Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) are leading the effort to have all other Code Talkers honored. They have singled out the eight Meskwaki solders who enlisted in the war. Frank Sanache, the last living Meskwaki Code Talker, died last month.
