Members of the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut elected a new leader over the weekend.
Lewis Randall, 68, said he will continue to press for the tribe's federal recognition. The tribe had won preliminary approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs before the state filed a challenge and the decision was overturned.
"You know there had to be some type of political pressure applied," Randall told The Norwich Bulletin.
The tribe is in federal court, hoping to rescind the BIA's decision.
