Three towns in Connecticut released a 33-page report that claims the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation is not entitled to federal recognition.
Leaders in Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston weren't allowed to submit more evidence in the tribe's case. So they prepared the report to outline what they said were deficiencies in the
original favorable ruling by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The towns say the BIA relied too heavily on the state's continuous recognition of the tribe.
Without that record, they say the tribe doesn't meet the seven mandatory criteria.
The BIA is preparing a new decision on the tribe because the Interior Board of Indian Appeals vacated the old one, citing an over-reliance on state recognition.
