The Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut will have to wait until October 12 to hear a decision on its petition for federal recognition.
The tribe was set to hear an answer on Monday but associate Interior deputy secretary Jim Cason said more time was needed. He sent a letter on September 9, citing the "complex and voluminous" nature of the case [PDF].
The tribe said it was disappointed but understood the need for the delay. The tribe had received a favorable answer in June 2002 but it was lifted due to a challenge from the state of Connecticut.
