Trump: 'We'll see whether they have sovereignty'

TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2003 Donald Trump once remarked that the Mashantucket Pequots "don't look Indian to me." Now, he's ready to fight another Pequot tribe over a botched casino deal. "We'll see whether or not they have sovereignty," he told The New London Day. Trump bankrolled the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe's bid for federal recognition in exchange for exclusive rights to develop a casino for the tribe. The tribe was successful -- but gained federal status as part of a larger historic group. The larger group, the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation, voted to oust Trump and go with another developer.
