The special master in the Florida Everglades case sided with the Miccosukee Tribe on Wednesday and said the state and federal governments violated an agreement to reduce pollution in the tribe's homeland.

A federal judge already found that the state and federal governments failed to meet pollution standards and that the state failed to complete a 16,000-acre filter marsh on time. Special Master John Barkett is now recommending the construction of an additional 18,000 acres of marshes.

The agreement at issue was designed to reduce phosphorus levels in the Everglades, the tribe's homeland. The chemical is released by sugar cane fields and contributes to the destruction of the environment.
