MONDAY, JANUARY 14, 2002 A year after she was nominated to head the Department of Interior, people are still wondering just who exactly is Gale Norton. To many environmentalists, she is exactly what they said she would be. A friend to industry over protection of the environment. Others aren't so sure and are taking a wait and see approach to her actions, particularly those affecting the Florida Everglades. She is pledging restoration as one of her top priorities. Indian Country heard the same promise about trust reform and, after 10 months of waiting, were hit with a plan to reorganize the Bureau of Indian Affairs that was created without tribal input. But to Joe Browder, an environmentalist who worked for the Klamath Tribes of Oregon, over a water dispute with non-Indian farmers, Norton has protected Indian interests. Get the Story:
