A New York lawmaker has introduced a bill to create a state reservation for the Oneida Nation.

The reservation would be created solely for the tribe's casino and conference center. It would not include the tribe's other businesses or properties, such as the hotels and restaurants at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino.

Assemblyman David Townsend, a Republican, is sponsoring the bill. He said the state can't afford to lose the jobs and benefits the tribe has created.

By ensuring the casino and conference center are on a state reservation, he said the tribe will be protected from legal questions over the tribe's properties. The tribe is currently seeking to have more than 17,000 acres, including the resort site, placed in trust.

Townsend also said a state reservation would give the state more control over gaming.
