The Oneida Nation is open to a land claim talks with New York Gov. George Pataki (R) but not if out-of-state tribes are involved, a spokesperson said.
The tribe had settled with Pataki back in 2002 but the deal fell apart after the Oneidas of Wisconsin objected. Later, Pataki signed land and gaming deals with the Wisconsin Oneidas and two out-of-state tribes.
Pataki is pressing the Oneida Nation to settle in light of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that said the tribe couldn't "unilaterally" assert sovereignty over its land claim area without going through the land-into-trust process. Pataki said the tribe's casino is not operating on trust land.
