The Oneida Nation and the city of Oneida, New York, signed an agreement to settle the tribe's property tax bill.
The tribe was refusing to pay property taxes on ancestral properties. But the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in March 2005 that the tribe had to go through the land-into-trust process first.
Since the decision, the tribe has been negotiating agreements with local communities. The tribe agreed to pay the city of Oneida over $5 million in back taxes and $150,000 in future tax assessments pending the acquisition of the tribe's land into trust.
Overall, the tribe is seeking to have more than 17,000 acres in two counties placed in trust
