The Oneida Nation of New York has proposed to settle its land claim for $250 million, half of what was proposed two years ago, The Albany Times-Union reports.
The paper said the tribe submitted a confidential documents to a federal mediator.
The offer proposed $250 million, to be distributed to all three Oneida claimants,
plus a 27,500 acre reservation for the Oneidas of New York.
In 2002, the tribe and outgoing Gov. George Pataki (R) had agreed to settle the lawsuit for $500 million and land rights. But the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, which wasn't included in the talks, opposed the deal.
The Wisconsin Oneida subsequently made their own settlement. But the New York Oneidas opposed because it would allow out-of-state tribes to assert sovereignty.
