New York Gov. George Pataki (R) is warning the Oneida Nation to settle its land claim in light of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that went against the tribe.
Pataki said a settlement of the 250,000-acre claim is necessary to ensure the tribe's casino can operate legally. State officials said the casino is not operating on trust land.
The Supreme Court ruled that the Oneida Nation cannot "unilaterally" assert sovereignty over the land claim area without going through the land-into-trust process for reacquired properties.
