The Oneida Nation of New York made a good-faith $650,000 payment as part of its property tax dispute with Oneida County.
The tribe has been hit with million in tax bills for property it owns in the county. Local officials say a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling allows the tribe to be taxed for land that is not held in trust.
The tribe still contends it can't be taxed but made the payment as part of negotiations with the county. The county has agreed to hold off on foreclosure proceedings while the case continues in federal court.
