Gulf Coast tribes still suffering from hurricanes
Friday, March 17, 2006

Four tribes on Louisiana's Gulf Coast are still suffering the effects of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, The New Standard reports.

The Pointe-Au-Chien Tribe and the three bands of the Biloxi-Chitimacha Confederation of Muskogees were among the hardest hit. Nearly every tribal member suffered damages to their homes. Many no longer have a place to live.

Since the tribes lack federal recognition, they aren't entitled to special services from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Individual tribal members can seek assistance but they say FEMA has been slow to help.

The tribes are now working together to help tribal members, some of whom have continued to stay in moldy and damaged homes.

Some tribal members from Tammany Parish in Louisiana were evacuated to Little Rock, Arkansas. They are being asked to go through FEMA to obtain housing and other assistance.
