The NCAA has asked three Sioux tribes for their views about the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.
The NCAA wants to know the tribal stance on the controversial name before deciding on appeal filed by UND. The school says it should be allowed to continue using the "Sioux" name during post-season tournaments. The NCAA's new mascot bans Indian imagery during such games.
The Spirit Lake Nation, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe have been asked to send in more information about the controversy. The Spirit Lake Nation previously passed a resolution that said the tribe didn't outright oppose the name.
