Tribal clients of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff gave $1.4 million to at least 171 members of Congress from 2001 to 2004, according to an analysis by Bloomberg News.
Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Montana) received the most with at least $136,500 from 2001 to 2004. He is the chairman of the Senate Interior Appropriations subcommittee, which handles funding for the Interior Department, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Office of Special Trustee, the Indian Health Service and the National Indian Gaming Commission.
According to Bloomberg, four other senators were among the top 10 recipients of Abramoff-linked tribal money. They were: North Dakota Democrat Byron Dorgan, with $54,000; Kansas Republican Sam Brownback, with $43,000; Mississippi Republican Thad Cochran, with $37,000; and Washington Democrat Patty Murray, with $36,980.
In the House, among the top recipients were: Rhode Island Democrat Patrick Kennedy, with
$115,000; Ohio Republican Representative Robert Ney, with $56,500; and Texas Republican Tom DeLay, with $35,000.
