JANUARY 11, 2001 A group on which Secretary of Interior nominee serves as a board member is involved in three lawsuits against the Department, including one protesting protections for bald eagles. The Defenders of Property Rights counts Norton as an advisor. It was formed in 1991 by an associate who worked with Norton at the Mountain States Legal Foundation, a group headed by James Watt, former Secretary of Interior under President Ronald Reagan. Norton also has a role on the legal advisory board of the Washington Legal Foundation, who has challenged several endangered species designations made by the Interior as well as a proposed ban on snowmobiles in national parks.
