JUNE 11, 2001

The Santee Sioux Tribe has asked a federal court in Nebraska to lift a contempt order that has resulted in $4.6 million in court fines.

Federal authorities wanted the casino shut down because the tribe has no gaming compact with the state. The tribe refused, resulting in a $6,000-a-day court fine.

But since the offending Class III gaming machines have been removed from the casino, the tribe wants an end to the fines.
