Claiming loss of revenue due to the recent Cerro Grande fire, the Pueblo of Santa Clara has proposed to open a casino on property they own in the nearby city of Española.

The tribe wants to open the casino as early as March 2001 in a shopping center on the city's main highway. The tribe says the land is located within its original Spanish land grant and would be considered Indian Country and therefore not subject to off-reservation approval from the Department of Interior.

The tribe does not operate a casino currently. They have several businesses, including a smokeshop and a movie theatre.

The tribe says the Cerro Grande fire burned land on which they rely for charging recreation permits. But The Albuquerque Journal does not disclose how much money they tribe is losing or will lose.

The casino would be located within several miles of the Ohkay Casino, owned by the Pueblo of San Juan. Another casino is operated nearby by the Pueblo of Pojoaque.
