FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2001 Freshman Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) says land-into-trust talks between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and three towns are making progress. Simmons says comments made by one town leader that the talks were doomed were not representative of the process. A North Stonington leader this week said recognizing tribal sovereignty was a "stupidity" the federal government had to resolve if Indians and non-Indians are ever to get along. In a letter to The New London Day, a reader praises Simmons for arranging the discussion between the tribe and the towns. In an editorial, The Norwich Bulletin says keeping the talks alive is important. Get the Story:
