MARCH 22, 2001

Charles D. Wiseman, 20, was charged on Tuesday with seven counts of misdemeanor assault for participating in the videotaped paint-ball attacks of Alaska Natives on the streets of Anchorage, Alaska.

Wiseman and two other boys, all White, videotaped themselves shooting a paint-ball gun at Alaska Natives. Authorities have characterized the case as a hate crime but the state has no hate crimes law.

The two other involved in the incident are teenagers, so authorities have not released their status.

Wiseman pleaded not guilty and is not being detained by police. A judge ordered him a curfew, prohibited him from driving, and forbid him from going near the place where they videotaped their actions.

Wiseman faces a maximum fine of $5,000 and one year in jail for each assault charge.
