Mohegan group seeks speedy recognition

MONDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2001 A Connecticut group called the Native American Mohegans is asking a federal court to speed up its bid for federal recognition. The group last week asked U.S. District Judge Janet B. Arterton to take over its recognition claim. Although it is unclear from The New London Day or a review of Bureau of Indian Affairs records when the group petitioned for recognition, the Native American Mohegans say the process moves too slow for their tastes. The group claims that it, and not the federally recognized Mohegan Tribe, are the true Mohegans. The group's lawsuit on the issue is proceeding in federal court with the state of Connecticut and the Mohegan Tribe seeking to dismiss it. Get the Story:
