At a public meeting on Tuesday, a preservation officer for Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico, said local residents should be the ones to decide if a cell phone tower near the Pecos National Historical Park should remain.

William Whatley said the tower appears to be disrupting activity at the park. But no sacred sites used by Pueblo members are being affected, he added.

Pecos residents have voiced objections about the 240-foot tower owned by SBA Towers Inc. SBA has submitted a new environmental and historic resources impact study to the Federal Communications Commission.

An FCC representative yesterday said the study is unsatisfactory and that the matter is under review.
