APRIL 13, 2001

Department of Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman on Thursday announced the promotion of regional forester Dale Bosworth to head of the US Forest Service.

Bosworth takes over the post from Mike Dombeck, who resigned late last month. Before he left, Dombeck advised the USDA not to settle any lawsuits stemming from the controversial roadless forest initiative.

A number of Western Governors, lawmakers, industry groups, and at least one tribe have filed lawsuiits to overturn regulations limiting road construction on almost 60 million acres of federal forest land.
