John B. Herrington didn't set out to be a role model for the Native community but he has since become one and probably for good. reason

Herrington, a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, will be the first Native American to go into space next year. He will be a member of the Space Shuttle Endeavour crew next August 22.

Herrington made an appearance at the 23rd annual conference of the American Indian Scientist and Engineering Society this past weekend. The conference was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
