President Bush's proposed cuts to the budget of the Smithsonian Institution are worrying supporters of the National Museum of the American Indian.

Construction on the museum has already begun and the project is expected to be completed in 2004. But Rep. Robert Matsui (D-Calif.) says a Bush cut could delay the museum's opening.

Matsui sits on the Smithsonian Institution's Board of Regents. He and other lawmakers have written a letter to the White House budget office, stating the importance of the museum.

Thomas Sweeney of the Smithsonian told the Associated Press that "there would be far fewer objects on display and fewer educational activities available" at the museum if the cuts are approved.
