THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2001 A 90-year-old Chinook woman whose son fought for her right to be buried alongside her ancestors has died. Winifred Basch died on Tuesday in Washington, where the Chinook Tribe is now based. Just last week, her son, Richard, appealed to a county in Oregon to have her buried in a cemetery with her ancestors. The county was recommending denying Basch the burial because the cemetery had been closed off. County commissioners decided to make an exception. The Chinook Tribe's status as a federally recognized tribe is being reviewed by the Bush administration. Get the Story:
