THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001 In an editorial today, The New London Day says Massachusetts' apparent willingness to consider Indian gaming is a sign of more casinos in New England. The paper says Rhode Island and the Catskills region of New York are next in line for tribal gaming. Luckily for the paper, there are no federally recognized tribes in New Hampshire or the editors might complain more. Tribes in Maine have been rebuffed on gaming. The only federally recognized tribes in Massachusetts, the Gay Head Wampanoag Tribe, has been seeking a casino for years. The Nipmuc Nation, whose status is on hold pending review by new Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb, also wants to open a casino. Other tribes in Connecticut seeking federal recognition are seeking casino developments as well. Get the Story:
