Donkey delivers to Indian Country

AUGUST 14, 2000 Mary Maryboy, a Navajo Nation delegate to the Democratic National Convention from the state of Utah, is like many in Indian Country who feel the sentiment "The donkey delivers" is true. Native Americans, just 1 percent of the population but gaining significant political prowess, are a traditional Democractic voting bloc. But with greater political power comes wider political awareness, leading voters like Maryboy to vote for Republicans like Senator Orrin Hatch and Senator John McCain, based on their views respecting sovereignty. Still, many believe that, fundamentally, the Republican party favors states and local governments, to the deadly cost of tribes.
