APRIL 27, 2000 A group of protesters who had been occupying LaFramboise Island on the Missouri River moved their camp from the island to Wakpala on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. The group argued that the 1868 Fort Laramie treaty gave them permission to occupy the island. The Lower Brule Sioux and the Cheyenne River Sioux are currently negotiating with the Army Corps of Engineers to regain control of the land. Get the Story:
