Mohawk men return to New York City
MARCH 16, 2001

Mohawk men from Canada have once again returned to New York City, continuing a tradition of construction work started by their fathers and grandfathers.

But this time, they are returning without their families. About 250 men work in the city during the day and make the six-hour trek back to the Kahnawake Reserve in Quebec.

Previously, there had been a sizeable Mohawk community in Brooklyn. Then, the construction business went bust and the men and their families slowly left.

Another building boom has begun, bringing back the Mohawk workers.
