Oregon considering 'squaw' change

FEBRUARY 28, 2001 The Oregon Senate on Monday approved two bills calling for the removal of all "squaw" place names in the state. One bill calls on the Department of Interior, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, and the Oregon Geographic Names Board to remove the word from place names. The other requires cities and towns to do the same. Only one Senator opposed the measures because he said it would create unnecessary costs for the state and local governments. Get the Story:
