EDITORIAL: Natives state still far apart

FEBRUARY 28, 2001

"On a daily basis we Americans eat foods from all over the world, from egg rolls and almond chicken to spaghetti and fettucini to burritos and enchiladas. Yet how often have I eaten an Alaska Native-American dish? Have I seen any offered in any Anchorage restaurant? I wouldn't even know where to get a recipe. . . Why haven't we incorporated Alaska Natives' culture into our own? I don't have the answer. It has been more than 200 years since Western civilization first came in contact with the Alaska Natives. It has been almost 150 years since the United States purchased Alaska from Russia. It has been 30 years since it became a state. Yet we still seem so far apart. "
