Navajo eviction may come and go again

JANUARY 29, 2001 A February 1, 2000, deadline to remove Navajo residents of Big Mountain, Arizona, came and went last year without incident and may pass again this year without any action. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Lodge said last year he would seek an eviction order for Navajo families remaining on land legally owned by the Hopi Tribe. But he is now considering an agreement with the Navajo Nation that would address the remaining families who have refused to move and have refused to sign an agreement recognizing Hopi jursidiction over the land.
