Young Alaska women battle blazes

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2001 They carry beepers to class but to a group of 13- to 20-year-old female firefighers and paramedics, the devices are anything but fashion statements. As members of the Dragon Slayers, the young women are part of the Aniak Volunteer Fire Department. They respond to fires, help during emergencies and perform life-saving operations. The team was started in 1993 and was at first composed mainly of boys, said fire and police chief Pete Brown. Get the Story:
