The American Civil Liberties Union is pushing the North Dakota Legislature to approve a plan that creates special voting districts on the state's four reservations.

The ACLU wants the state to divide the House districts on the Fort Berthold, Standing Rock Sioux and Spirit Lake Sioux into two subdistricts. Each reservation would elect only one representative, thereby increasing the chances of an Indian lawmakers, said the ACLU.

ACLU's proposition is not included in any map under consideration by the Legislature. The latest GOP-drawn map has drawn opposition.
